what's new...

Hey everyone, first off, Caro, I hope you and and the baby are doing good...I can't wait to see the both of you! When do I get to babysit?

So anywho, as for my internship, its still going. I went again yesterday, and the first few hours I was there I was pretty much helping Ronald, the program coordinator, get some packages ready, and look through the directory of the past artists that have worked there, to get their info. And then I worked with Linda Pollack. With her we mostly did a lot of organizeng to get ready for the discussions and exhibits that she will have in January. She tells me that she feels bad that we are doing "boring data entry and organizing stuff" at the moment, but she promises that it will get more interesting. She has explained to me that once I come back from break, it will be extremely more busy and there will A LOT to do...I'm pretty excited, because she's really trying to make me as involved as possible.

As for my SRP, I'm going to get in contact with La'Tonya to see if I should just trun in my 3 short bios to her...

Well besides all that I've been pretty busy with everything else...school, work,...life. But its ok, cause its almost winter break!
Now I must get through finals.

This Week

I heard back from McNair and I've now moved onto the next step of the process. Yay! Apparently, there's also an interview portion, which I'm scheduled to do on Thursday.

School has eaten-up all of my time. I have an eight-page paper on Blake's Epistemology due Friday and I've got two novels to read. Woo!

This week a colleague and I worked on a manifesto for the literary theory governing my research: Pop Modernism. Thus far we have decided that we want to focus on texts which are in dialogue, or are derivations from original texts, and we want to examine those new texts reflect an attempt to reconcile literature with present sociocultural moments. Because, after all, literature is usually in dialogue with other literature rather than life. Conversation became problematized when we realized that we know what we want to discuss, but we don't know what comprises a literary theory, so our next meeting is probably going to address that issue.

Anyway, back to the paper.

Sample Lesson Plan

I went to Miliken Middle School last Wednesday, which is an Performing Arts Magnet school. When I got to the school, I was amazed to see a lot of students dancing, singing, and playing music. I wish I went to a school like this one because it would have allowed me to tie my dance interest with other subjects. I was also glad to see girls and boys dancing together. I was worried about creating a curriculum for boys and girls, but as long as I don't just teach movement that is specifically meant for girls I think the material should be appealing to the boys. I also got advice from the dance teacher that I should not just teach movement that is too basic because the students will get bored. I need to incorporate the basic movement with something challenging like a jump or a turn. I was happy to hear that from her. My trip to Miliken Middle School got me more excited and motivated to teach dance.
I am still putting my curriculum together for my internship with ArtsIn and ArtsBridge. I met with Amy last Friday to discuss my lesson plan ideas in more detail. For my first lesson I will be teaching ballet. In addition, I will discuss with the students the origins of ballet and show them pictures of different body types of ballet dancers. I want to show the students visually that any one can dance regardless of body type. Hopefully, this will get them motivated to dance, and I also hope that will gain some confidence. Then I plan on teaching the students jazz and I want to use the musical Chicago as the main concept for the jazz portion. I want the students to analyze the various body types and body images that are portrayed in Chicago. I also want to
incorporate a nutrition journal for the students so that they can record what they are eating at home and also write down the types of fruits and vegetables they are eating. In this way, I can keep track of of what they are putting in their bodies. I also want them to write down how many times they eat fast food. I am also planning to use the farmer's market as a means for the students to be aware of the farmer's movement in Delano. The concept of my curriculum is movement: movement in dance, fast food movement, and social movement. My planning process is coming to a close and I will be executing my curriculum next quarter. I can't wait! I will let you all know how it goes!

Congratulations to Carolina (...and an obligatory update)

I third, or is it fourth(?) the congrats to Carolina. Yay!

And now I need to update my progress.

My posts have been, well, not happening lately because of my McNair application, which was finally finished and I'll hopefully get in. The work I've been doing so far has been relating to my McNair ap. I've been reading more scholarship on fic, honing my research proposal and planning my methodology. I practically lived in the GMP office for a week. I'll know whether or not I've been accepted in December, so wish me luck.

Until then, I'm reading up on more scholarship. I'm talking to someone online who's doing a similar project on alternate sexualities in online fanfiction, so that's been thought-provoking. I've also found a comprehensive survey (which apparently was someone's phd dissertation) of slash readers from 2005 which has given me a better idea about the reader participation aspect of slash.

That's about all for now.

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving.

CoNgRaTs!!!!!!

congrats to caro and wendell!!!!! they had their baby!!!!!!!!! caro finally popped out that baby!!!!...yay!!!!
I can't wait 'till we all get to see her....
hope you and the baby are doing well caro...we all send you many blessings and many many good vibes : )

Well as for my internship...its going good. I went yesterday for the second time. They had me design some logos for them that would be used on some labels that they need that are going to be sent out. So it was kinda nice to be able to put my photoshop skills, the very few I have, back to work.

That is pretty much what I did the whole time since Linda Pollack was out that day, therefore I wasn't able to work with her this time around....

All in all it was good, now I'm starting to try figure out my schedule for next quater, to see how I'm going to fit everything in again. I'm also trying to see if I could fit in some time to go to SPARC next quarter...we'll see, only time will tell...

Wilson's Scholars Luncheon

Hi Everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I attended the Wilson's Scholars luncheon last Thursday and I had the lovely opportunity to meet Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, who help fund the ArtsIn program. I appreciate their generosity, and I am also grateful their dedication to UCLA. Their continuous support has helped me pursue research in an area that I am passionate about. I would never think that I would be able to combine my two interest of dance and public health, but with the generosity of the Wilson family I have been able to realize that goal.
I was glad to meet the other Wilson scholars as well. I was happy to see students that truly want to make a difference in the world and are passionate about their field. We had a chance to discuss why we are passionate about our majors and what inspires us to make a difference.
I am a sociology major and learning about how people interact with one another will help me better understand the students I will be teaching at Carver Middle School. I am also passionate about dance. Dance allows for expression and creativity and I hope that my students will be able to relate to dance in a similar way. I also thought of using dance as a form of exercise because I know when students hear exercise they are really turned off. So I hope that they find dance an appealing way to get fit.
This lunch was a great opportunity to honor the students, faculty, and the Wilson family. I am so glad that I went and thanked the Wilson family in person. This is all for now. I will write again soon!

update...

ok so I started my internship at 18th St. on Monday. It was good...granted it was the first day so who knows what else there is to expect.
I was there from 12-6....long day. The first few hours I did some archiving for Ronald and the last two hours I spent with Linda Pollack. We took some pictures together, and she had me go through all of the photographs that she had already had taken in her space with her.
Ronald, the program coordinator. gave me a form to fill out, and that I will have to fill out each time I go.
So far it went good...its nice to be in that "artist" enviroment, but I guess I'm still trying to figure out how what I reeeeeeally want to be doing there.
My schedule has still been kind of hectic...I don't have that second job anymore, buuut, I have been spending more time doing band stuff...recording, shows, etc.
I've been all over the place....
basically I'm looking foward to this 3day weekend we have coming up...woot woot!

Another Update

I haven't started teaching yet, but I can't wait until I do. I am not only preparing my curriculum for next quarter, but I get a chance to sample teach a part of my curriculum to a middle school that already has an art curriculum in place. I will get feedback from my peers and students in the class, which will be helpful because it will allow me to make any necessary changes.
I should also be meeting with the sixth grade head teacher for Carver Middle school soon. She wants a movement focus in my curriculum, but I hope she also allows me to teach about nutrition and body image. I plan on helping the students make a newsletter about healthy recipes and nutrition facts. This will give the students a chance to display the knowledge they gained from my class and allow other students to be informed. I also have to figure out how I will incorporate body image in my curriculum. I am thinking about using the media and how they portray this ideal body type that isn't attainable. I think I will use some celebrity photos and how they are harmful to our self-esteem. It is crucial to instill more self-confidence in these students because they are at the age when they can be insecure about their bodies. I also think I might use the book "Fast food Nation" for inspiration as well. I want the students to know the truth about fast food. And hopefully, they can share this knowledge with their families so that they start eating healthier meals.

Returning to High School

So this past week with my ArtsBridge classmates, we went to Watts to visit Jordan High School and the Watts towers. I was happy to get out of UCLA for a little while and see what is going on in the community. When I visited Jordan High School the students were glad to see us. They were curious about college and we tried to answers any questions they had. Jordan High School has developed their arts program. They have a visual and media arts class for the students, and we got a chance to look at the student's work. This visit made me realize that arts integration is still developing in th schools. I wish I got the chance to observe the dance program at the school so I could get an idea of the student's interest in dance. I am very excited to work at Carver Middle school next quarter. I think it will be very challenging, but a lot of fun. I am going to be contacting the head teacher of the sixth grade so that I can start planning my curriculum. I am going to focus on movement and I also plan on teaching the students about how unhealthy McDonalds fast food is. McDonalds fast food is a business and I don't want the students to contribute to this kind of business. I also wanted to add that I plan on talking about the farm worker's movement in Delano because I wanted to give the students some historical context about farmers since the students have a farmer's market at their school. So that is what I have so far. I will update again soon.

i'm finally starting my internship!

ok....so I'm definitely going to be working at the 18th St. Art Center, and I start on Monday. I'm not going to lie.... at first I was a bit concerned because I didn't know exactly what the internship would entail....and I also didn't know how would it exactly benefit me...but after the meeting Carolina and I had last Monday, it looks like it is going to be a reeeeeeeeally good opportunity. I start off by working with Linda Pollack, which I'm excited about. I have decided that for my SRP I'm goign to cocentrate on doing research on each of the artists that I will be working with to really know what their work is about.
This will be good to see the process in which a show or exhibit is created...

Oh yeah...and this past Thursday night I FINALLY got in contact with Judy from SPARC. I went to their dia de los muertos celebration and I talked to her...I'm goign to try to meet with her sometime this monthand have a meeting, and go over my proposal with her, to look into a possible collarboration between SPARC and 18th St?? If not I already talked to her about going to help out their, and if not this quarter, definitely next quarter as part of my Chicano/a Studies 100SL class.

All in all, everything is starting to sort itself out...

Carolina....thanks again for having that meeting on Monday with 18th St. with me!!!

A Post for the Curious

These past few weeks have been quite eventful. Many of my nights and early mornings have been dedicated to finishing many creative projects in a studio in the San Fernando Valley, 15 minutes north of my home in Westwood (right next to UCLA). In company of my guitar, and colleagues, Josue Arias and Bryce Wilson, many exhausting nights of recording have proven to have been quite fruitful. Three tracks created in the our studio have been used for videos that document the happenings at this annual's Hispanic Heritage Awards in Washington D.C. I strongly encourage you to visit the link below and check out the videos of this event, but more importantly to become familiar with some of the work I have been producing in the past few weeks.

This clip features the RED CARPET at the Hispanic Heritage Awards and an original song of mine called "TODO LA NOCHE". If you listen closely, you can hear me singing while actor BENJAMIN BRATT shares a few words.

The clip also features stars like Rosario Dawson, Judy Reyes, from SCRUBS, Reggaeton/hip-hop star PITBULL and well known actor Nicholas Gonzalez.

I am also proud to say that I plan on taking a trip down to South America this December to once again share some music I have co-produced with singer/songwriter Alonso Gonzalez. Along with other musicians, we will be playing at the famous TELETON de ECUADOR, raisings funds for handicapped children in the country. I recently finished recording his demo and sending it off to ECUADOR. We started the last recordings on Monday @ 10pm and ended Wednesday at 4am. A very intense experience. I'll keep you posted on that event.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, my group AREPA will be performing next week, Thursday, NOVEMBER 8th at 9pm at a PANE E VINO. This Beverly Hills restaurant features a great italian cuisine. Hopefully you can join us on this special evening as we showcase some of our new music to many of our friends and supporters. Its sort of a big deal since many entertainment figures will be present. It'd be nice to have some moral support :) :)

Thats all for now, but if you want to see more of my music visit my page @

whats been going on....

Ok so check it....right now I'm still in the process of figuring out what exactly my internship is going to entail.
Once I hear back from Ronald from 18th Street, I'll figure out what exactly I can be doing there.
I then have to figure out how my research (srp) will connect to that. Right now I'm still looking into Guatamalan migration in Mexico.

Tomorrow I start my work study job at UCLA live.....we'll see how that goes....I'm really looking foward to it : )
Besides that I have the band (we have a show this friday), and I'm actually working another job only for this month (its at a huanted maze) because I NEED the money right now.

I want to get my internship going asap, and basically right now I'm just trying to get my schedule together...hopefully it will all fall into place soon.

My Project So Far

The basic premise for my project has changed last year. The idea for the conference while impressive-sounding, revealed why it was so impressive-sounding—it would have killed me. Thus, the new tentative plan is to create a website. An online conference has been mentioned, but pending McNair decisions and other such things, that idea is something vague and future-ey. For now, the website if probably going to be a resource website for slash fiction scholarship. I know that people have posted links in fanfiction resource pages. In fact, amateur scholarship on fanfiction itself has its own name online: “meta”. However, meta and serious scholarship are very different and few people are in touch with actual scholarship on the subject. And that’s a ramble about what I know so far as to how this subject has been explored online before.

Now, for the moment I’m collecting scholarship on the topic to put in the resource section. Anna Alves recommended some books to me that I’m checking out. One of which is “Harry Potter and the Ivory Tower” a book that I picked up a year ago at a library, and am having fun reading fully. I already know that the website will be geocities, as I am not a web designer. However, so near as I can tell, geocities doesn’t have a template for a forum, so I’m trying to figure out how to set one up. I’m either going to put one on the page, or I’m going to set one up separately on livejournal or facebook. The latter option seems the most palatable, as my desired audience is already on those sites.

That’s all for the moment. Right now much of my time is going into my McNair application, but even if I get in, I hope to still maintain the website and to post my own paper on the subject at the end of next year.

week 3- making contacts in New Zealand

I am taking an independent study with Amy Shimshon-Santo and further developing my internship for New Zealand. After many emails to countless professors and community arts members in Auckland and throughout New Zealand I have two prospects: Marilyn Kohlhase, Director o'kaioceanikart, and Herman Pi'ikea Clark, a member of the faculty of the College of Education at Massey University in New Zealand. I asked myself the following questions to help me clarify my intentions for this internship. My answers follow each question.

Note: One of the distinguishing features of New Zealand Arts education has been
the inclusion of Maori and Pacific cultural perspectives within the content
and teaching orientation of the national arts curriculum and teacher
education processes. (source: Herman Pi'ikea Clark, Massey University)

1.) What do I need prior to my arrival in New Zealand? (Preparation)

I am trying to make find a professor and community member (culture bearer or art teacher) in New Zealand that I could develop an internship with that involves me working in the community in either a school setting or youth center setting that has children/teenagers learning and or practicing Pacific Island culture/dance/language/customs. Since my specialty is in dance in arts education, I would like to find the opportunities to not only observe other art teachers in their processes, but I would also like a chance to teach a dance course myself to students utilizing my own knowledge and experience of U.S. arts education practice and the California art strands. I would need mentorship from the professor and community member to guide me in this internship and through my research. At this time, I need the professor and community member that I decide to work with to assign to me books/articles/readings based around New Zealand’s national arts curriculum and dance as pedagogy that I should study now before I arrive in New Zealand.

2.) What campus will you be at in New Zealand? (Location)

I am not sure what Massey University campus I am going to be attending. It depends on what classes are being offered at each particular campus. However, I specifically want to take classes on Arts Education, New Zealand’s national school system curriculum, Pacific Island (Maori) Studies/History/Society, and or Pacific Island art, music, and dance. These areas of study would particularly assist in my research and internship work. I am working on this part of the paper work (choosing classes and campus location) for EAP at the moment.

3.) What is the purpose of the internship? (Purpose)

The purpose of this internship is to compare specific similarities and differences between the school systems here in the United States and the school system in New Zealand. I am aware that the New Zealand school system believes in carrying on traditional Maori traditions such as language, dance, chants, and the arts by teaching it in the classroom. I want to know why this is. (This section may grow into my core research questions) What is the condition of their society that makes it work in New Zealand (or the condition of their school administrations)? Is this only in private school or all schools including public? Is every student required to learn about the Maori culture in school? Why can’t this work in the U.S.? What is the effect or impact of bringing in Pacific Island culture and arts into the classroom (in New Zealand vs. in the U.S.)? Furthermore, I would specifically like to have a focus on dance as pedagogy (Pacific Island Dance).

4.) What do I want to get out of this internship? (Holistic Development)

I hope to attain a better understanding of how the national arts curriculum functions in New Zealand and why. (I may just focus on dance education if “arts” education is too broad) I want to learn how it came to be this way. What are the strengths and weaknesses of New Zealand’s national arts curriculum and how can knowing this assist us in the U.S. with improving our own school systems?
The rich experience of teaching and learning Pacific Island culture and dance in the Pacific Island region, specifically New Zealand, will strengthen my knowledge about modern Pacific Rim societies and strengthen me as a teacher, dancer, and advocate for arts education. I will study first hand the idea of Trannationalism in reverse by practicing it- myself who has been trained in Polynesian dance in the U.S. who now will be bringing back this Pacific art to the Pacific (New Zealand).

5.) How long will the internship need it to be? (Duration)

I would like this internship to last the whole 6 month duration that I am studying abroad in New Zealand, February thru July of 2008. My research is a year long project that includes the internship but essentially is just a component to my entire 3 year fellowship with Arts IN. My goal is to analyze the lessons from cultural dance education and cultural arts education in both contexts (of New Zealand and the US) to contribute to intercultural understanding about arts education/dance education.

Now that I figured all of this out hopefully i can make Marilyn Kohlhase and Herman Pi'ikea Clark my cultural bearer and professor contacts/research mentors. This week (besides attending Amy's artsbridge class) i will begin reserching and reading about migration, immigration, and transnationalism to articulate the “fluxo e refluxo” the active back and forth relationship between the U.S. and the countries where our ancestors came from. Amy suggests that I read Lisa Lowe and Aihwa Ong. She also says that the Latino Cultural Citizenship book is really good for regional identity construction and migration

Curriculum Ideas

I have been taking theArtsBridge course for 3 weeks now and I am learning so much about an arts integrated program. We had a guest speaker two weeks ago and she presented her work on political posters. She also showed the class political posters that 7th and 8th grade students at Los Angeles junior high schools created. I have to say that the students work was amazing. The images they created had such powerful messages.
My project is coming along. As I attend Amy's class, I am gaining more ideas for my curriculum. I plan on taking my class to the farmer's market at their school so they get a chance to see what fresh food looks like. I remember going to farmer's market with my mom on Saturday mornings and I want my students to get a chance to do that with me and their families. I also want to include a cooking lesson into my curriculum. I plan on creating cultural meals for my students. This will allow my students to eat something healthy, but also learn the history and culture behind the meal. I hope that this aspect of my curriculum will inspire the students to cook at home with their parents.

What is Arts IN?

AAP Mentoring Program's Arts Initiative (Arts IN) works to engage artists with the larger University and Los Angeles community while bringing art into disciplines and communities that normally do not access arts activities. We do this by supporting students from a variety of departments in specific arts related projects with established partnerships including- Arts IN Civic Engagement, Arts IN Education, Arts IN Global Health, Arts IN Labor, and Arts INternational. Our objective is to mentor under-represented and under-resourced students who would normally not consider the arts as a viable area of study leading to a career in the arts. Students will receive academic, professional and financial support over a required two year commitment providing the academic and practical background required to advance into a variety of successful careers in the arts including graduate school, education, activism, therapy, entertainment, production and management.
